The two men left, talking in whispers. Suddenly they turned round and ... The two men started to leave, talking in whispers. Suddenly they turned round and pulled out guns that looked like 38s.

"Don't move," the tall man said to me. "And you, back up against the wall," he said to the man behind the counter. The short man walked over to the cash register and took the money out of the drawer. The tall man went over to the telephone and jerked the wires out of it. Then they both ran to their car and took off.

I looked at the man behind the counter. He looked a bit pale, but didn't waste any time. He took a screwdriver out of a drawer and started repairing the telephone. He was a fast worker. After about five minutes he had a dialling tone coming out of the receiver. He dialled a number and told the police about the men and their car.

"No, no, they didn't go to El Paso, they took the Hacknett turnoff." He hung up and said to me: "Those guys have robbed a bank in Wichita."

I shook my head. "They sure had me fooled," I said. "I thought they looked perfectly all right."

The man got me another cup of coffee and opened himself a bottle of soda pop.

"They fooled me too, at first. But then I caught a glimpse of one of the men's guns in his shoulder holster."

"You knew there was something wrong with those 2 guys, but you still helped them on their way. Why?"

He laughed.

"I can understand showing them the map," I said. "But why did you tell them about the new bridge? Now there's no chance of catching them. If you hadn't told them about the bridge, there would at least be some hope."

"There isn't ..."

"No, there isn't a hope," I went on. "Not with that fast car they've got."

The man smiled again. "I don't mean there isn't any hope," he said. "I mean, there isn't any bridge."
